The MA is an essential member of the health care team who is responsible for patient care of patients aged six months throughout the life span.  The MA will work collaboratively with an LPN and/or RN to provide safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, educative, individualized and goal-directed nursing care to patients and their families in the Surgery Center.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in admission process by escorting patients from the reception area and providing appropriate preparation, instruction and assuring patient privacy.
  • Assist in FEMTO laser procedures as needed.
  • Assist in sterile processing as needed.
  • Assists in safe transport of patients. Cleans and remakes stretchers utilizing proper infection control procedures and operates stretchers to meet patient needs.
  • Under direction of RN and/or LPN, obtains vital signs, assist patients to ambulate, dress/undress.
  • Provides nourishment for patients under direction of RN and/or LPN.
  • Assists in patients discharge procedure including escorting patient safely from facility to transportation.
  • Assists in unit housekeeping activities.
  • Properly disposes of bio-hazardous waste.
  • Assists in restocking supplies.
  • Assists in other tasks as directed by RN/LPN.
  • Serves as a patient advocate.
  • Identifies own learning needs and goals and seeks direction to meet those needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain proactive response to all situations.
  • Monitors and assesses the physical status of the patient through personal observation and interaction.
  • Provides appropriate and knowledgeable Instructions/training/education to patients and family members.
  • Reports and documents all pertinent observations.
  • Utilizes supplies, equipment, and resources to contain cost without compromising delivery of care.
  • Utilizes universal precautions when providing patient care.
  • Demonstrates genuine concern and empathy to internal and external customers by treating each person with respect and dignity.
  • Maintains knowledge of all equipment and supplies and is familiar with their location, especially emergency drugs, supplies, and equipment.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to needs of the center accepting changes in assignment and schedule based on patient care needs.
  • Maintains accountability for customer satisfaction.
  • Seeks guidance, direction, and assistance when needed.
  • Performs other duties as may be appropriately required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current State licensure as Medical Assistant 
  • Minimum of one-year Medical Assistant experience, outpatient surgery experience preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ophthalmology experience preferred
  • Sterile processing/instrument prep experience preferred
  • FEMTO laser experience preferred
