The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the cleaning, packaging, sterilizing, and storing of supplies, instruments and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans each item according to manufacturer's instruction.
  • Inspects and lubricates items as required.
  • Ensures that each item is in good working condition; i.e., alignment, grasp.
  • Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure.
  • Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure.
  • Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date.
  • Positions items correctly in autoclave.
  • Selects the proper cycle, being sure to seek assistance if instructions are not clear.
  • Checks indicators for proper function.
  • Performs biological and pressure monitoring tests required on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedure.
  • Changes and dates autoclave recording graphs.
  • Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma is required
  • Previous experience in processing surgical instruments is required or demonstrated ability in sterilization techniques with a thorough knowledge of instrumentation, care and handling.
